The American Legion Northeastern Auxiliary Unit 459 Poppy Museum & Flowers of Remembrance EST. AUGUST 2009
Curator: Margo Forrester - American Legion Auxiliary
As a past American Legion Auxiliary President and Poppy Chairperson, I have become somewhat fond of the poppy and what it stands for. It is a symbol that "We remember" our veterans' sacrifices.
My friends and family know my passion for poppies, since that is where the idea for this museum came from. My sister e-mailed me a picture of actress Angelina Jolie wearing a poppy, commenting "Look who's wearing a poppy!" (picture displayed on page 2.) As I examined it, I realized it wasn't one of our American Legion Poppies. I discovered it was the Royal British Legion Poppy.
That inspired me to see if other countries had Legions and poppies. I discovered there were! I contacted the different countries' organizations and started to collect their version of the poppy. It warms my heart to see several countries honor and help their veteran heroes.
The American Legion Poppy program is one of the oldest and widely recognized Auxiliary programs. Veterans assemble the poppies for a small wage, the Auxiliary purchases them and distributes them for donations. The monies raised are spent exclusively on veterans and their families. This program also promotes awareness and respect for our veterans by educating our membership and the public. - Margo Forrester
