Operation Post 459” (Our Capital Campaign)
Our American Legion Northeastern Post 459 has been around since 1947 when we first received our charter. We want to be around for many more years to come! We are a family compiled of Legionnaires (veterans), Auxiliary and Sons of the Legion (direct family members of a veteran).
We promote patriotism and do community service and are champions of children. We typically honor fallen heroes and veterans by marching in the Grand Rapids Memorial and Veterans Day parades. We flag the graves of veterans at Mt. Calvary Cemetery annually. We are part of the Kent County Honor Guard that performs a military service for deceased veterans in Kent County. We send care packages to active-duty military. We serve food to the homeless and help fill food pantries. We donate school supplies and winterwear to school children locally. And we celebrate teachers & students.
We’ve been helping our community for decades and now we need some help. Our building is in desperate need of numerous repairs. On the outside, repairs vary from tuck-pointing the mortar joints of our building brick to updating our faded signage to replacing lighting & surveillance in our parking lot to replacing an awning. On the inside, we need to replace our dilapidated accordion partitions to replacing some old leaking plumbing to updating our building surveillance & security to replacing carpet to fixing a countertop. All of these repairs or updates come to approximately $150,000.
We’ve already been doing some internal fundraising and have raised a few thousand dollars. On Tuesday evenings, we host “Show Me The Money.” We’ve raffled some themed gift baskets (St. Patrick’s Day and a Lions Memorabilia). One couple donated two $50 gift cards that were raffled off. Plus, funds were raised from our Auxiliary Bake Sale and the profits from 2 casino bus trips.
So, we are reaching out and asking for donations big and small. We are asking our members, our own organizations, the general public, businesses and corporations. Consider giving in honor of a veteran you knew or just donate to this veteran organization so that we may continue our mission to help veterans, active-duty military, children and our community.
Please make checks payable to Northeastern Post 459, Memo=Operation Post 459. If a check doesn’t work, you may donate in person and ask for your donation to be deposited into Lynn Terhune’s drop safe. If any questions, contact Margo Forrester 616 363-6688 or mscottforrester@gmail.com.
For God and Country - Thank You!
